How the consultation works

The conversation. The reason for your visit, your history, the tests already done and any treatments already tried. This exchange guides the rest of the consultation.

The examination. A gynecological examination suited to your situation and, if needed, a smear or an HPV test. Each step is explained before it is done.

Ultrasound, if it is indicated. It can be performed at the practice itself, during the same consultation, with no separate appointment.

The explanation and the decision. We go over the results together, what they mean and the possible approaches. The benefits and implications of each option are explained clearly, so that we can decide together what comes next.
Your first visit
What is useful to bring. Your recent tests and imaging, ideally from the last two years, your smear or HPV results, any operative reports, and a list of your current medications.
When to come. There is generally no need to plan the consultation for a particular point in the cycle, unless you have been told otherwise: colposcopy and smears are done outside your period. If you are bleeding on the day, the consultation is still worthwhile: the examination will be adapted and, if needed, completed later.
Taking the time needed. A first consultation often takes longer than a follow-up. Its length adapts to your situation, your history and the questions you want to raise.
Frequently asked questions
For most women an annual visit is enough, even without symptoms. The interval depends on age, contraception, history and previous findings. A new symptom is a reason to come sooner.
Yes. Part of the examination is still possible, and neither the conversation nor the ultrasound is affected. A cervical smear will be rescheduled.
There is no fixed length. A first visit takes longer, and each consultation lasts as long as the situation requires.
